Position Summary

The Clinical Extern Program is an innovative opportunity to expand your skills and learning while continuing your formal education in an accredited Bachelor of Science Nursing Program. If you are currently enrolled in your second to fourth year of your program, you are eligible to apply for this unique opportunity.

The Clinical Extern is an unregulated health care provider working under the supervision of registered health care professionals within the Nursing Float Pool at Ross Memorial Hospital. The Clinical Extern will develop their competencies and promote their professional growth by applying knowledge and skills learned through their academic program, Clinical Externs may be considered for future opportunities upon successful completion of their BSCN and CNO licensing.

The Clinical Extern will work alongside registered health care professionals to gain an understanding and appreciation for the role of the Registered Nurse while developing clinical expertise.

The Clinical Extern will report to the Clinical Manager and will work under the direction of registered nursing staff to assist with the functioning of the nursing team at the patient care level. They will adhere to strict confidentiality and contribute as an enthusiastic and patient-focused reliable employee promoting a positive patient and family experience.

The Nursing Float Pool is currently seeking eight Temporary Part-Time Clinical Extern to join their team.

Effective Date: May 6, 2024
Ending on or Before: March 31st, 2025

Essential Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited University degree program, and entering into 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year BScN nursing program (a current official school transcript will be required if you are being considered for this opportunity)
• Proven good attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard
• Ability to work all shifts as necessary
• Current BCLS
• Current immunization record including double vaccine for COVID-19
• Current Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
• Demonstrate understanding and ability to follow all Ross Memorial Policies related to confidentiality, infection prevention and control, appropriate apparel and patient safe handling.
• Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients and the public
• Demonstrated problem solving, communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
• Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis

Hours of Work

Must be available to work eight and twelve hour day, evening and night shifts, Monday to Sunday. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements.
